Telos

Have you ever read about those strange cultures that live in close proximity with extended families and share the daily toils of life together. While admittedly idealizng the positive aspects of such living, I find the idea of close connection a cozy choice. Yet I am hundreds, in some cases thousands of miles away from friends and family. Hopefully "Telos" will erase the miles.

...because of the Angels-What??

Do you ever read a portion of Scripture and...laugh? I am workng on an interpretive assignment on 1 Corinthians 11:2-16. Actually, I should be doing that now. This is every pastors favorite passage to preach from, the enigmatic passage about head coverings.

The verses of this pericope have made me think, question, and as noted above, laugh.
Here's the verse that does it:

"Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels"

Paul elsewhere has given some pretty good arguments for head coverings, but what in the world does he mean by "because of the angels". I'll have to use that line at youth group. "Joe, why can't we have an all-nighter? " "Because of the Angels". "Joe, why can't I smooch with my boyfriend/girlfriend?" "Because of the Angels". "Joe, why can't we play football in the sanctuary?" "Because of the..." "Angels, we get it Joe."

Okay, so I know Paul was making a point that the Corinthians would have understood, but it could really make a great rational for any prohibitions.

ha. that would be a creative usage of scripture out of context! i personally cringe from the passage....it's such a bone of contention.
