Telos

Have you ever read about those strange cultures that live in close proximity with extended families and share the daily toils of life together. While admittedly idealizng the positive aspects of such living, I find the idea of close connection a cozy choice. Yet I am hundreds, in some cases thousands of miles away from friends and family. Hopefully "Telos" will erase the miles.

Nice...but weird

I feel weird sometimes. Misunderstood sometimes. My fault? Yes. No.

At work, I am the guy who does not swear (even after dropping a stack of dishes, although I might have murmured under my breath), claims all of his tips, rolls his silverware most of the time, doesn't smoke, doesn't drink. I do get frustrated, sometimes fail to help out a coworker, and make mistakes frequently. My cooks are so generous when I put in a wrong order or forget to put in an order right away! Still, I think my co-workers are perplexed by my actions. They see that I march to a different drum but are not sure why.

I fear that they may think that Christianity is a strange adherence to these rules that no normal person would ever agree to. In that, the miss out on the essence of Christianity:

Knowing Christ. If only they knew my Lord Jesus. In veiw of his grace they would gladly offer themselves as living sacrifices. A desire for honesty and trust in the one who said, "do not worry about tomorrow", would make claiming tips a no-brainer.

Oh to tell the story, of that carpenter from Galilee.

Go to my blog and see my post from today entitled "It Always Happens This Way." May the Lord bring that to you soon.

On a more pointed note, you can be assured that without testifying to the Lord when He opens the door, non-Christians do think that Christianity is an adherence to rules. Worse, many non-Christians (and some Christians) link Christianity so much with the Religious Right that the Gospel gets lost somewhere. The only way that anyone can tell that Christianity is more than a set of behaviors is if they come face-to-face with the Father, through Christ, by the Holy Spirit. Telling will help. Otherwise, you'd better be on your knees, hoping for the fortitude to follow through on God's opportunities to witness.

Joe, I thought I'd be the first real person to comment on your blog. I worked in a factory this summer driving a forklift, and people were amazed that I didn't do certain things they did. Keep it up, and let it lead to spiritual conversations. Stay true.
