Where have the prophets gone?
I am weary of people nowadays claiming to be prophets. For a couple of years, I have been having discussions with an older gentleman in my church, from a charasmatic background, but now is a member in our wesleyan church. He talks much about the prophetic ministry. At first, I listened while dismissing his ideas. However, as I have watched his life, he is not just a man trying to cause a ruckus, trying to major on a minor. He loves Christ, he loves the church, he loves the teens he teaches in Sunday School. He finally pointed me to a book by Graham Cooke called "Developing your prophetic gifting" that might help me think about the role of prophets or the gift of prophecy. In reading the table of contents, it seems to take Scripture seriously as well as the dangers of prophecy gone wrong and the blessing of spirit filled prophetic ministry.
I am not ready to fly out to the next prophecy convention, but I am looking forward to really taking a closer look at Scripture and being open to having my assumptions sifted.

I'm married to someone that I think has the gift of prophecy. This is nothing to be taken lightly, and you'll be shocked at how the Lord reveals things to you if He manifests that gift in your life. To answer your question, though, there's a prophet at my house.
Thanks erskine. I had no idea who would respond to this or how, in hindsight, it doesn't suprise me that you did. Your openness to the Holy Spirit's work has always challenged me, much in the same way as the man I mentioned at my church has. I am beginning to suspect that some I felt might be taking the Holy Spirit too serious were actually just taking Him more serious than myself who perhaps took Him not serious enough. There's lots to flesh out here, but let me just say thanks for chiming in, I hope you will continue to throw thoughts in from time to time. May God continue bless your house!
The only problem I have is with the so called capital 'P' prophets that go around speaking as if there words are the 67th book of the Bible and show no remorse when their words don't measure up to God's perfect standard.
Yeah, I agree with you here. I am interested to see what the role of a prophet is supposed to be. In a brief conversation with the gentleman from my church he alluded to the fact that part of their role may be to get the church back on track with Scripture. I wonder if in that way Martin Luther could be seen as providing a prophetic ministry to the Church.
One of my big turn offs to "prophecy" was the advertisements I saw in Charisma magazine (while I was board in the Library as library asst. I perused mags)for prophecy conferences where you can go and receive not only a personal prophecy but also learn how to prophesy.
But I suspect there is much more to prophecy than those examples.
In reading Os Guinness' "The Call" i came across a passage (p. 49) where he mentions Martin Luther serving a prophetic role and emphasizes that prophets are to bring people back to the original calling from which they had fallen away.
"The Call" is an excellent resource for you to be in right now. Are you reading it for class? :)
Let me echo you and Matthew above, whose problems are with the myriad of false prophets running many churches out there today.
Let me also give you an impression I have that has been confirmed over and over with prophecies much more concrete than mine, from people much closer to God than me. The Lord is about to do something none of us will believe if we didn't know it was the Lord. There is going to be a manifestation of the Holy Spirit unlike anything we're asking for, but it will be good. It's going to center on Christ's true Church and will separate sheep from goats in a big way. Revival will strike the hearts of those who really believe - even if that belief is simply the size of a mustard seed.
That, my friend, is why I am open to the Holy Spirit.
Thanks erskine. I am reading "The call" for class "Vocation and ministry".
Regarding prophecy, your words have a familiar ring. That is what the gentleman in my church has refered too from time to time.
"I perused mags for prophecy conferences where you can go and receive not only a personal prophecy but also learn how to prophesy."
That sounds more like a horoscope than a prophecy..
