Telos

Have you ever read about those strange cultures that live in close proximity with extended families and share the daily toils of life together. While admittedly idealizng the positive aspects of such living, I find the idea of close connection a cozy choice. Yet I am hundreds, in some cases thousands of miles away from friends and family. Hopefully "Telos" will erase the miles.

The Passing of a Great Man

I woke up this morning to my radio playing music that that seemed out of place. Instead of the usual intro music to Love Worth Finding Broadcast, I heard a very solemn anthem. Then the announcer came on stating that Adrian Rogers had died tuesday, Nov 15th, 2005.

He was part of the Southern Baptist Convention so I did not always agree with his theological conclusions but have been impressed and inspired by his courage in proclaiming the Gospel of our beloved Jesus Christ.

I am grateful for his ministry, mourn his passing, and rejoice that he is with the Lord he loved so much.

Nice...but weird

I feel weird sometimes. Misunderstood sometimes. My fault? Yes. No.

At work, I am the guy who does not swear (even after dropping a stack of dishes, although I might have murmured under my breath), claims all of his tips, rolls his silverware most of the time, doesn't smoke, doesn't drink. I do get frustrated, sometimes fail to help out a coworker, and make mistakes frequently. My cooks are so generous when I put in a wrong order or forget to put in an order right away! Still, I think my co-workers are perplexed by my actions. They see that I march to a different drum but are not sure why.

I fear that they may think that Christianity is a strange adherence to these rules that no normal person would ever agree to. In that, the miss out on the essence of Christianity:

Knowing Christ. If only they knew my Lord Jesus. In veiw of his grace they would gladly offer themselves as living sacrifices. A desire for honesty and trust in the one who said, "do not worry about tomorrow", would make claiming tips a no-brainer.

Oh to tell the story, of that carpenter from Galilee.

Out on a Limb

To quote a great song:

"God had to become a man and go out on a limb for us"

What a great pun.

"anyone hung on a tree is under God's curse"

"and the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, 'he saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!'"

Thanks

...because of the Angels-What??

Do you ever read a portion of Scripture and...laugh? I am workng on an interpretive assignment on 1 Corinthians 11:2-16. Actually, I should be doing that now. This is every pastors favorite passage to preach from, the enigmatic passage about head coverings.

The verses of this pericope have made me think, question, and as noted above, laugh.
Here's the verse that does it:

"Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels"

Paul elsewhere has given some pretty good arguments for head coverings, but what in the world does he mean by "because of the angels". I'll have to use that line at youth group. "Joe, why can't we have an all-nighter? " "Because of the Angels". "Joe, why can't I smooch with my boyfriend/girlfriend?" "Because of the Angels". "Joe, why can't we play football in the sanctuary?" "Because of the..." "Angels, we get it Joe."

Okay, so I know Paul was making a point that the Corinthians would have understood, but it could really make a great rational for any prohibitions.

Yo...no no!

What better way is there to teach teens about Christ than by listening to a Christian rap song energized by a bumping beat and meaningful message?

That was a real question rather than a rhetorical one.

I should say that one girl did ask if we could use the song ("we worship you" on Ambassador's Thesis ) in church. I cannot wait for the day.

I knew that rap can be hard to understand so I typed out the lyrics. To do this I had to listen to the song a few seconds at a time and try to understand what each word was. One hour for a 4 minute song.

The lyrics are powerful: Christology, soteriology, attributes of God done with powerful beats and utilizing poignant, and sometimes hilarious similes. (Good deeds will stand like a man that is one-legged.
We don’t have enough like trying to graduate with one credit.)

To many of the sharp souls in the youth group, listening to rap was a sin against their "death metal cult".

As an eclectic, I have to be more aware of the power that music has for shaping one's image during the teen years.

The teens could have cared less about the words of the song I played. (Is there better music than that which honors God?) There would have been less fuss over music with questionable lyrics and good sound than the worship rap song.

My charge to them: Learn to love rap yo. No not really. Find music you enjoy which turns your thoughts towards the heavenly realms where Christ is seated on the throne.

The Telios of "Blogging"

I am a few months or years behind when it comes to technology. I have read several blogs of friends and former classmates at BBC. What a great way to keep in touch, share new ideas, do theology. Blogging is not for everybody, I'm not sure if it is for me. But at the risk of missing out on a worthwhile activity, here's my shot at it.

Might this result in Christ's glory!

Why do people blog? to know? to be known? to learn? to teach?
